In an interview with InfoMoney, Luiz Gustavo Bezerra, partner in the Environmental, Climate Change and Sustainability practice, analyzed Brazil’s strategic role in the global climate transition and in the development of the carbon market.
According to him, Brazil benefits from unique advantages, including an energy matrix composed of approximately 90% renewable sources, the vast biodiversity of its biomes, and solid experience in carbon capture and storage (CCS) projects, factors that position Brazil as one of the natural leaders in the race toward economic decarbonization.

Bezerra also highlighted that the creation of the Brazilian Emissions Trading System (SBCE), established by Law No. 15,042/2024, represents a key regulatory milestone for the advancement of the carbon credit market in the country. The new system combines mandatory and voluntary mechanisms, paving the way for a more robust regulated environment that is expected to drive investments in bioenergy, agribusiness, sustainable aviation, and nature-based solutions (NbS), such as reforestation and biome restoration.

With COP30, which will take place in Belém in 2025, Brazil will have the opportunity to showcase to the world its ability to transform sustainability into a competitive advantage, positioning itself as a global leader in the climate agenda and in the promotion of a low-carbon economy.

“[At COP30] Brazil will have the opportunity to debunk myths regarding the sustainability of its agricultural and biofuel production,” Bezerra noted.
